Position: ROTATION SUNDAY SCHOOL
COORDINATOR
Team Leader: Director of Christian Education
Position Description:
Desirable qualities—This person should be of strong moral
character, deepening and growing personal faith in one’s
relationship to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This person must
also be committed to weekly small group study and worship with other
adults, and demonstrate an ability to relate well to children from
Senior kindergarten through 5th grade, as well as a desire and an
effectiveness in working closely with youth and adult volunteers.
Availability—This person will shadow Richard Whitaker,
Director of Christian Education mid August through September 2008;
gradually, then fully taking over this responsibility in October
2008-May 2009; from early June through mid August there would be no
Rotation Sunday school responsibilities
Time commitment—This salaried, quarterly position is for
approximately 10 hours weekly (minimum) from mid August through May.
Approximately 2.5 hours weekly would be spent in the education
office, 2.5 hours of set-up of FH and classrooms, 3 hours providing
assembly and classroom leadership on Sunday mornings + an additional
1.5 hours of take-down, put away and record keeping. About once
every 4 weeks an additional 2-4 hours will be required for editing
of each new unit of curriculum, attendance at Children’s Education
Team or Safe Sanctuaries Team meetings, phone recruitment. Hours
beyond the paid 10 hours maximum would be considered as volunteer
hours of service to the church.
Payment—Will be based on a ¼ time annual salary, spread
equally over 12 months at a rate negotiable upon experience; with
payment twice monthly on the 15th and last of each month. For the
first 3 months, a weekly time log is to be kept for
compensation/evaluation purposes.
Basic Areas of Responsibility—
- Requires regular office hours (preferably on Tuesdays when
Richard is off) for full access to the computer
- Selects with the Children’s Ed. Team 5 curriculum units each
year, keeping in mind year long and seasonal church themes and
our 3 fold purpose of “Loving God, Caring for others, Serving
the world.”
- Reviews the current 4 year Rotation Sunday School theme plan
for the selection of these units and for making recommendations
to the Children’s Ed. Team for rewriting those yearly theme
objectives as needed
- Works closely with the volunteer coordinator that helps with
teacher/shepherd recruitment and training; as such, makes sure
that all curriculum units are edited, printed and distributed to
incoming teachers in a timely manner.
- Identifies, along with the 2 Sunday School superintendents
and the entire Children’s Ed. Team, prospective teachers and
shepherds for on-going recruitment needs; assists in the contact
and recruitment of shepherds and teachers
- Maintains accurate and updated ministry profile ‘job
descriptions’ for key positions in Rotation Sunday School and
forwards all changes and additional names of new volunteers on
to Nell Nash
- Comes in on Fridays or Saturdays to set-up Fellowship Hall,
kitchen, and opens up upstairs classrooms.
- Provides needed props, costumes, printed classroom resources
as dictated by the curriculum to teachers
- Works with Sunday School superintendents to put away
everything after each weekly assembly opening; locks and secures
all upstairs classrooms
- Posts all Sunday school attendance figures immediately after
Sunday school is over; turns in all mission monies to Finance
volunteers to count on Monday mornings (or delegates this to
others)
- Creates a Biblically themed object lesson, altar décor for
each week’s opening assembly
- Prepares a weekly classroom parent newsletter of what has
taken place that week in Rotation Sunday school
- Communicates welcome, includes parents, offers a listening
ear, and when appropriate, suitable counsel re. parental
concerns, family problems etc
- Selects 4 quarterly mission offering projects each year;
submits requests for disbursements to mission agencies in a
timely manner.
- Encourages children to reach out and invite friends to join
them for Sunday School and other church events that pertain to
children and families.
- Communicates and works closely with the Director of
Christian Education regarding such things as Teacher recognition
and appreciation, presentation of third grade Bibles/Christian
education weekend, special church-wide mission
collections/projects that children are engaged in, fall Rally
Day, recruitment of key volunteer chairpersons or co-ordinators
as vacancies arise.
- Prepares and leads seasonal/ special day Sunday school
lessons such as UNICEF Sunday, Christmas Sunday, Easter Sunday
and Pentecost when normal Rotation schedules are suspended.
- Writes and distributes an every 5 weeks shepherds’ summary
lesson which shepherds then lead with their students to recap
the learnings of the unit being completed
- Works closely with Director of Education to make sure all
new volunteers in Rotation Sunday School have been through the
Safe Sanctuaries application and screening process, and that
renewals are recommended to the Director for processing in a
timely fashion.
- Other duties that the Director of Education, or the
Children’s Ed. Team may need to add to this position
Accountability—This person is directly accountable to the
Director of Christian Education and secondly to the Children’s
Education Team in carrying out mission objectives, sound
educational principles using the multiple intelligences, strong
Biblical grounding and teaching. They will serve as an
ex-officio member of both the Children’s Ed. Team and the Safe
Sanctuaries Team.
Evaluation—A three, six month and one year performance
review will be conducted by the Director of Education, with
additional input solicited from the Children’s Ed. Team members.
Yearly goals will be established around areas of strength and
those needing improvement with the option of renewing this one
year position in summer of 2009.
Application/Interview process—This job description will
be posted in the church newsletter, available at the front
office desk and listed on our web site during the months of late
March through May 31, 2008. An application form will need to be
filled out, and a resume attached, and returned by the May 31st
deadline, then interviews with a Search Committee (composed of
members of the Children’s Ed. Team and possibly Staff Parish
Relations Team) will take place in June, with selection made by
early July.
